Simple things YOU can do to save the earth |
|
|
And save yourself money short term: Switch to compact florescent lights- 13 watts replaces a 60 w incandescent and doesn't produce heat. Turn out lights you are not using turn down the heat. Turn up the air conditioning When you buy appliances look for energy-star rated.
When you buy a car look for the best gas mileage. Walk on short trips. Consolidate your auto trips. Car pool or take public transportation.
Eat fresh food instead of processed, canned or frozen. Eat local food, it is fresher, riper and healthier and hasn't been transported across the country (or across the world) Some of the following may be costly at first but pay for themselves in the long term: Insulate your home. Explore solar hot water heating. The cost of electric solar panels are coming down, if your home gets enough sun the investment might pay.
Replace your old inefficient heating or cooling system.

Little or no cost: Recycle everything you can. Compost yard waste, vegetable peels, etc. Feed your stale bread to the birds. Buy and use reusable grocery bags. Don't take a bag for a single item. Buy electricity from a green company. CT Power offers several plans for a small cost premium. Get involved in your community: Support elected officials who care about the environment. Write or call elected officials to support energy friendly programs. Support environmental justice (why should the incinerator, landfill, & pollution sources always be in poor and minority neighborhoods?)
