First Presbyterian... Who are we?

The downtown First Presbyterian Church, founded in 1851, is a richly diverse group of people from both city and suburbs committed to ministry to and with the people of the City of Hartford.

We are building a warm and caring community that spiritually nurtures people in worship, education, fellowship and active involvement in mission.

We believe that the Church is called to reflect the kingdom of God which embraces all believers. We invite, accept and welcome into our membership and leadership people who differ by age, race, ethnic background, sexual orientation, family status, economic situation and theological viewpoint. This diverse group energetically and cooperatively participates in the life of this congregation, its mission and its leadership.

We are committed to our Presbyterian traditions of representative government and reformed theology, while open to working collaboratively in mission and ministry with other faith traditions.

At the January 15, 2008 meeting, the Session voted to have First Presbyterian become the second church in our state to become a More Light Church (New Haven First is a new member also).  By doing so, we have joined our denomination’s national organization  in fighting for the inclusion of GBLT people into the life of the greater church and also followed our own mission of being a more inclusive church. For more information visit mlp.org.

Morning Worship, each Sunday at 10:30 AM, is the heartbeat of the Church. We welcome all to join in praising the Lord and hearing God's message. We celebrate communion on the first Sunday of the month, and all who trust in Christ are invited to participate. A fellowship hour with refreshments follows the service at 11:30 AM.

A supervised nursery for infants and toddlers is offered each Sunday during worship and Adult forum..

Music is a vital part of our service of worship. Those with any talent and interest in singing in the choir or in playing an instrument are invited to contact the Director of Music.

Pastoral Care. The pastor is available to meet with individuals or families on any occasion of concern. The pastor can also help with referrals to other agencies serving particular needs.

Small Groups. A variety of short term and ongoing groups offer additional opportunities for fellowship, adult study, socializing over dinner or discussing current literature.
